Quarter 1 Vocab: Analyze- To study and break down Central Idea/main idea- The most important point for a paragraph or section. Theme- The message of the WHOLE story Internal conflict- a conflict that occurs within a character, such as struggling with fear or sadness External conflict- involves a character who struggles against an outside force, such as nature, a physical obstacle, or another character Inference- An educated guess based off a text or prior knowledge Sensory Language- Descriptive language (describes the 5 sense) Interpretation- To explain the meaning of something Subjective- an opinion Objective- a fact Claim- A point that you are trying to prove text evidence- evidence from the text cite- to give credit to the author paraphrase- to restate in your own words direct quotation- taking someones words directly from the text Text feature- design elements (ex: boldface, italics) that highlight the important info/ help organize the text Sidebar-additional information that is usually set in a box alongside or within an article heading- a title that identifies the topic or content Subheading- a kind of heading that identities a beginning of a new topic Chronological Order- Arranged in order of time of occurrence Author’s Purpose- The different reasons why an author writes something (to persuade, inform, entertain). Author’s P.O.V- the perspective of the narrative voice (1st, 2nd, 3rd person P.O.V) Memoir-A collection of memories that an individual writes about moments or events Biography- An account of someone’s life Figurative language- Metaphor- An implied comparison between made between two unlike things that actually have something in common Personification- When you give human qualities to an object or animal. Simile- Using like or as to make a comparison between unlike things
